Seamen's Day to be held at Hafnarfjordur Harbour

05. June 2009

Hafnarfjordur Harbour will be celebrating Iceland’s famous Seamen’s Day this Sunday, 7th June, and will come alive with a varied programme of events.

Among the various activities on offer will be exciting boat cruises for kids and adults, games, puzzles, face painting, fresh Hafnarfjordur Harbour fish soup, and much more.

Seamen’s Day is set to begin on Sunday at 08.00 with the hoisting of the flags. The main family fun events will all take place near the Hafnarfjordur fish market between 13.00 and 16.00. Local Hafnarfjordur meteorologist, Siggi Storm has announced that the weather forecast is set to be bright and dry.

As well as holding its own festival on Sunday, Hafnarfjordur is also this year’s ‘guest town’ at the Festival of the Sea in Reykjavik, providing visitors with a colourful insight into Hafnarfjordur’s people, environment and culture on Reykjavik’s West Quay on Saturday between 14.00 and 16.00.

In addition to this, the Hafnarfjordur District Museum will hold a photo exhibition from Hafnarfjordur’s 100-year history at the Reykjavik Seamen’s Museum on Saturday, starting at 10.30.

This year’s Seamen’s Day is being held in co-operation with the Festival of the Sea in Reykjavik and Akranes. Everybody is encouraged to visit as many attractions at the Festival of the Sea as they can and to enjoy the weekend as much as possible.
